Wondering about your application status?
If you’ve submitted an application to the BEd program, we are sending out acknowledgement emails as quickly as possible. We have a backlog of submissions right now so it will take between 1-2 weeks to acknowledge your application. Don’t panic; just keep checking your application status in the Student Service Centre.
The same goes for any reference reports and transcripts that you’ve arranged to mail into our office. It takes around 1-3 business days for us to process the mail upon its arrival in our office. If you’re worried that a reference report or transcript hasn’t been sent, be sure to check with your referee or college/university.
In the meantime, we appreciate your patience and will be in touch with you as soon as we can.

Technical Troubles
We’re aware that applicants have been having some difficulty with the Program Selection in the BEd online application. Some of you have reported that you’ve been instructed by the system to change your program selection because your specializations are the same. The issue is that the system allows you to apply for two program choices (e.g. Elementary 12 month and Secondary 12 month). However, it’s very easy to miss that the title reads “Choice 2 Program” after moving from “Choice 1 Program.”
If you’re facing this problem currently, follow these steps to correct your mistake:
1) Select blank fields under “Degree,” “Credential,” “Credential Version” and/or “Specialization” and
2) Click “Next” and continue with your application.
If you are unable to change your 2 Choice Program to blank fields, then select different fields altogether so that you can move on to complete the rest of the application. Email admissions.teo[at]ubc.ca to delete your 2 Choice Program after you have submitted the application.
For other technical issues, please contact sswebsupport[at]exchange.ubc.ca.

The BEd application system opened yesterday!
Please watch our blog for answers to common questions, technical issues affecting everyone, and other newsy items. For those of you who have already explored it, we hope you’re finding it a straightforward process. Otherwise, please drop us a comment below. If you enounter technical problems, email sswebsupport[at]exchange.ubc.ca and copy Dilys Chiew dilys.chiew[at]ubc.ca) so that we are aware of it.
For Elementary 12-month and 2-year applicants, be aware there is a glitch in the system that is affecting your choice of program. The July 2010 Summer Session is ONLY available for Elementary 12-month option. However, the system will allow you to select Elementary 2-year, NITEP, or WKTEP for the Summer Session. We hope the issue will be resolved soon; in the meantime, please select your program choice with care. For those of you who have submitted applications already, our admissions staff will change your session accordingly.

Checking in
One month away from application lift-off!
Right now, our application system is undergoing some tweaks that will hopefully make the process a little easier (on the eyes) and more seamless. If you’re a UBC student, you’ve probably noticed the changes in the Student Service Centre, where you will find the supplemental application forms once you’ve submitted the general online application. We’re looking forward to seeing the rest of the modifications soon.
For now, you may be interested in checking out the following updates to the TEO website.
- What’s a competitive GPA? How many people were admitted this year? These are typical questions posed by prospective students. You can find your answers on our Admission Statistics (remember to expand the section labelled “How is my application evaluated?”).
- Important dates and deadlines are available on the Application Timeline. You can start sending us your transcripts and references now and we’ll hold on to them until you submit your application.
- Got questions about housing or financial aid? We’ve updated our FAQs – take a look!
You might also be interested in exploring the following featured program options …
- Music Education for those who aspire to cultivate the next Diana Krall.
- French options in teaching kindergarten to grade 12.
- Home Economics to inspire the next generation of fashion designers and chefs — or at least teach the basics of survival post-life-with-Mom-and-Dad.
If you want to talk about some of these options, don’t hesitate to contact us! Anne and I are available for advising appointments or contact us by IM (during select hours) or email (teacher.ed[at]ubc.ca).

Beginnings
First of all, let me extend a warm welcome to the new B.Ed. Elementary 12-month students that started yesterday! It was pleasant and energizing to see all the new faces around the TEO. We hope you enjoy and thrive in the next twelve months of learning and teaching — it wil be busy, so please remember to renew and relax when you have the opportunity.
Some news for the 12-month/2-year B.Ed. students starting in September:
- The registration system is still open for eligible students. Most of the seats have filled up in the the different options, so we’d like to encourage all eligible students to register as soon as possible. Derek Frenette, Program Planning Manager, is on hand to assist you; you can reach him at 604-822-5242.
- Orientation dates, times, and locations have been posted.
- Dates of the program are also posted now: Elementary, Middle Years, and Secondary.

2009 BEd Application News
The BEd extended application deadline for 2009 has passed and the online application is now closed. Thank you to all who applied for our extended deadline. An acknowledgement email will be sent to you within approximately two weeks of the deadline. You will then be able to track your application status and the status of your documents online at the UBC Student Service Centre website (www.students.ubc.ca/ssc). There is a reasonable grace period for the receipt of supporting documents, however, you should arrange to have any outstanding documents submitted urgently as applications with missing documents will be cancelled at some point. Applicants must refer to the SSC for information about application status or documents. Most admissions decisions for the 2009 intake will be sent in May.

Update from the Eye of the Storm
Hi everyone,
In the last couple of weeks, Jennifer and I have been keeping our nose to the grindstone and the hard work is paying off. We’re happy to report that we’ve started emailing admission decision letters for July and September applicants. If you got your application in by Feb. 13, including your references and transcripts, it’s likely that your application is being reviewed at this very moment (or it’s sitting in our inboxes). If your status hasn’t changed in the SSC, or you haven’t received an email, don’t panic – we’re going to be sending out decision letters periodically throughout April and May. For those of you who haven’t submitted supplemental forms, please do so by April 30 to remain eligible for the September start.
Feel free to ask questions in the comments box below. First, a disclaimer: I will not be answering any questions about your application status. Thanks for playing.
