News: BEd Admissions 2009
February 16, 2009
If you have applied to the Bachelor of Education program beginning in 2009, your acknowledgment should be sent to you by email approximately two to four weeks from the application deadline.
After you receive your acknowledgment email, you may then track receipt of any outstanding documents and check the status of your application on the UBC Student Service Centre web-site, www.students.ubc.ca/ssc. We allow a reasonable period of grace for supporting transcripts and reference reports which may not have reached us by the deadline. Please note the deadline of May 29, 2009 for final transcripts for courses currently in progress and completed in April (for which an interim official transcript should already have been submitted). The deadline for proof of registration for summer courses is May 29, 2009. Applicants are not required to submit a UBC transcript.
Applicants must submit the online BEd Supplemental Application (statement of experience, essay, etc.) and Academic Requirements Form as soon as possible if they have not already done so.
Decision letters for the July Bachelor of Education program will be sent by email in March/April 2009. Most decision letters for the September Bachelor of Education Program will be sent by email in May/June 2009.

I saw on the website that the application deadline has been extended until April 30th, but that priority will be given to those who have applied by February 13th. I submitted all my documentation by the February 13th deadline, but on the SSC it says that my application is ready to be evaluated as of February 18th. Will my application be given the priority reserved for those who applied by the 13th? Or will it be considered “late” even though I had my documents in by the deadline?

Hi Jen, your application is considered on-time if you submitted it by Feb. 13. We do not go by the date (Feb. 18, in your case) on which the file is ready for evaluation.

Hello,
I am interested in the B-ED program at UBC. I am a recent grad of Ryerson University in Ontario and wanted to find out if the courses I have taken can be calculated and evaluated by someone. I wanted to get this all in before the deadline.
Can someone please get in touch with me to let me know?

Laura | February 24, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Hi, I’m also interested in the B-Ed program at UBC. I finished my undergraduate degree at University of Manitoba and was wondering if I could send you a copy of my transcript as well for review. I would like to figure out whether I need to take any additional courses. Thanks!
7.
Dilys Chiew | February 25, 2009 at 9:51 am
Hi Laura, you may send me an unofficial copy of your transcript. Please let me know which option (Elementary, Middle Years, or Secondary) and teaching specializations you’re interested in presenting. If you’re interested in all of them, let me know as well.

Hello,
I am interested in the B-ED program at UBC I have a bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration Concentration Management information System. I am very interested in applying for the 12month secondary Business Eduacation program. Can I send you a transcript for your review. I am interested in starting September, thanks.
9.
Dilys Chiew | February 26, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Hi Emelio, you may want to start by taking a look at the Business Education requirements for admission: http://www.teach.educ.ubc.ca/stepstoapply/pdfs/worksheets/secondary/business_ed-08.pdf. By the sounds of your degree, it looks like it meets most, if not all, the academic requirements. Just make sure that you’ve taken accounting, marketing, and commercial law courses. Also, we require 6 credits of English literature and/or composition. If you still have questions after consulting the above link, send me your transcript.

Yenlinh Chung | March 2, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Hello,
I am interested in BEd UBC program with specialization in Biological Sciences. I do seem to meet all requiremements except for EOSC (beginning level – 6 credits). Although I have not taken begining levels of EOSC or GEOG, I have taken EOSC 472, GEOG 372, and GEOG 350 (@ UBC). I was wondering if this counted towards the beginning level 6 credits?
Thank you for your help!

Dilys Chiew | March 2, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Hi Yenlinh, if you haven’t taken introductory Earth and Ocean Sciences, that’s fine. We allow students to fulfill this requirement in the B.Ed. program.

hello,
I am also interested in the B-ED program at UBC. My name is John Kang and I graduated from UBC with a bachelors in psychology in the year 2000. For the better part of 8 years following, I have been teaching at pre-schools, elementary schools and english institutes for 5 years in Seoul, Korea. I am currently living in Seoul and would like to know how I can apply. I would also like to know how long a criminal records check will take and if it’s necessary for me to be in vancouver to receive it.
sincerely

Hi John, you can apply online to the B.Ed. program by following the instructions on our website: http://www.teach.educ.ubc.ca/stepstoapply/apply_online.html. Please be sure that you’ve met the academic requirements for the program option (Elementary, Middle Years, or Secondary) of your choice. Criminal record checks are not needed at this time. When they are required, we will make arrangements to conduct the criminal record checks on behalf of all successful applicants.

Hi ,
I am Mehdi an ex-secondary school french teacher in Tunisia, i wonder if i have to restart studies in BC UNIVERSITY in order to teach french language and literature to secondary level student. Notice that, beside my bachelor in french language and literature, i had a graduate diploma from university of Montreal. I am aiming to teach any level i ve no preference. Should i send u my diplomas and my mark papers to tell me what could i do with it?
THANKS

Dilys Chiew | March 9, 2009 at 10:49 am
Hi Mehdi,
If you are already have a teacher education program degree, you should contact BC College of Teachers about the re-certification process. Their website address is http://www.bcct.ca. However, if you don’t have the equivalent of a teacher education program, you will have to complete the program in order to gain teacher’s certification. In that case, you can email me your transcripts of all post-secondary institutions that you’ve attended.
18.
Mehdi | March 12, 2009 at 11:49 pm
Hi Dilys,
Happily, i ve received your answer regarding my situation and my aims. I ve visited the teacher college website, then i was very discouraged of the various and hard conditions that i would met (like that of ordering my university to send my transcripts to the BC college of teachers) and many others hard conditions. Notice that the transcript is given just one time in the university where i followed my studies. Beside that i ve to send fees to evaluate my sheets. So i don t know if it s worth to do the first step or to forget about it. I wonder if they can underestand that some conditions are out of my control. So what i could do now is to have a pre-evaluation of my case in order to know if i woul be rewarded a teacher certification or not.
So i am waiting for good news from you.
Have a nice time

Adrienne Bissky | March 15, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Hi!
I’m Adrienne and I’m currently completely my bachelor of arts at UBC (finishing in April 2009) and I’ve applied for the BEd. program starting in July. I submitted all of my application information and supplemental applications by the February 13th deadline, but I haven’t heard anything back about whether or not I’ve been accepted. It’s four weeks since the Feb. 13th deadline. I’ve also noticed that the registration date for the elementary BEd. July start is March 20th (this Friday). So I am wondering when I will hear whether I’ve been accepted or not.
20.
Jennifer Stewart | March 16, 2009 at 9:52 am
Decision letters for the July intake will be sent in late March and April. Registration for the 2009 July intake is in mid-May. The March registration date is for BEd students who began the program in 2008.

Alison Sze | March 18, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Hi there,
I’ve applied to the 12 Month Elementary French option starting in Sept. 2009. I have completed all the paper work and am currently finishing a few courses at UBC. I took the French language assessment test once already but did not receive a good mark on the oral component. I was registered to take it again this Saturday (March 21) but I have recently been informed by Clara Soyris that the session has been canceled due to a lack of participants. Therefore, she has offered me the possibility to take the exam in April or May when there are hopefully more people signed up. Is this going to be a problem and slow my application down? Is it too late to be taking this on April 18? Please let me know ASAP!
Thanks in advance,
Alison
22.
Jennifer Stewart | March 18, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Hi Alison. Not to worry, it will not be a problem if you take the French Language Appraisal in April or May.

Alison Sze | March 18, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Thanks Jennifer for the quick response!

Tabitha | March 20, 2009 at 12:37 pm
Hi – I’m Tabitha and I live in Saskatchewan. I have applied for the Elementary 12-month option starting in July, and I am just curious what the statistics are for out-of-province acceptance into the program. Is there a certain percentage that is saved for out-of-province applicants or is the first priority for BC applicants? Or does this even concern the decision at all?
I’m just looking for a heads up! Thanks.
26.
Dilys Chiew | March 23, 2009 at 9:05 am
Tabitha, we don’t provide statistics for out-of-province applicants and we don’t treat out-of-province applicants differently from BC residents.

Hi Prabhakur, please see our website to determine if you meet the admission requirements for entry in the B.Ed. program: http://www.teach.educ.ubc.ca/stepstoapply/index.html. If you are ready to apply online, please see http://www.teach.educ.ubc.ca/stepstoapply/apply_online.html.

Richard Neal | March 23, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Hi Dilys,
I mistakenly applied for both the middle-years program and the secondary program online; I checked the wrong boxes . . . I just wanted to apply for the secondary program. Do I have to give you some form of official notification to delete my unwanted application for the middle years program?
Thanks,
Richard
30.
Dilys Chiew | March 23, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Not to worry, Richard. We have you down for the Secondary option in the system.

Darren | March 23, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Hello,
I am interested in applying for the 12 month elementary program starting in September. I graduated with a BA in 2006 and would still have to take three courses in the summer to fulfill all of the requirements (including Math, yuck!). I’m just wondering how many students are admitted to the program, I’m a little scared of going through 9 more credits and then not making it in with my late application. Also, for those who don’t make it in for September, can they re-apply for July 2010? Thanks in advance.
32.
Jennifer Stewart | March 24, 2009 at 10:33 am
Hello Darren. You can apply with courses in progress. All prerequisites must be completed by the end of August at the latest (for the September intake). There is a deduction of one percent per credit from the admissions average GPA for prerequisites completed between May and August. Please see the admissions statistics on our website for information about the number of applicants accepted into the program (http://teach.educ.ubc.ca/stepstoapply/pdfs/Statistics_Summary_2006-09.pdf). If you are not accepted, then you can re-apply for a future session.

Alicia Tallman | March 23, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Hello
I have applied for the elementary school July start option and have yet to have all of my documents submitted due to unforseen circumstances. They should be in by the end of this week. Is it safe to assume that I am too late to be accepted for either the July or September start dates?
34.
Jennifer Stewart | March 24, 2009 at 10:26 am
Hello Alicia. It is not too late to submit your documents. Please submit the missing items as soon as possible.
35.
Darren | March 24, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Jennifer, in regards to the missing credits and their effect on the average, could you please clarify?
So if I take a three credit Math course and get 75%, that means it will be counted as 72% when it is averaged in with the other 33 credits?
Thanks.
36.
Dilys Chiew | March 26, 2009 at 10:29 am
Hi Darren,
I think it would be best if you email your questions to Jennifer Stewart (jennifer.stewart@ubc.ca).
Thanks,
Dilys Chiew

Lynne Potter Lord | March 26, 2009 at 10:22 am
I have applied to the 12 month secondary B.Ed before and been accepted, although circumstances prevented me from attending in the end. Is is necessary for me to re-aply with al the requirements listed (references and essay, statement of experience?) I am happy to fill in the application and pay, but before I go through the process of asking for more reference letters, etc. I wanted to check. Thanks
38.
Dilys Chiew | March 26, 2009 at 10:31 am
Lynne, we only keep reference reports and transcripts for one year after the application was initially submitted. If you applied for entry in September 2008 but chose not to start the program then, we would still have your references and transcripts on file. Otherwise, you will have to submit the entire application again.

Michelle | March 26, 2009 at 11:19 am
I have applied for the elementary school July start option, however have not received an acknowledgment email. However, I have checked my SCC and noticed that my status has been updated. I’m afraid I might miss the decision letter via email as well. Will the decision be posted on SCC as well? What should I do?
Your help is much appreciated.
40.
Dilys Chiew | March 27, 2009 at 9:31 am
Michelle, please ensure that your email address is updated in the Student Service Centre as we will be sending the admission decision letters by email. If you have any questions, you should speak with Jennifer Stewart, Elementary Admissions Officer (jennifer.stewart@ubc.ca). Decision letters for July applicants will be issued very soon.
41.
Jennifer Stewart | March 27, 2009 at 9:32 am
Hi Michelle. If you email me (jennifer.stewart@ubc.ca) with your student number I can check your application status for you. You may also want to check your email address on the SSC to ensure that we have your current email address on file.

Mehdi | March 28, 2009 at 11:12 pm
Hi Dilys,
I want to know if teaching french language is very recomanded in BC or not. In other words i want to be sure if there will be a job after having studied for x number of courses. Is the job garanteed? How much in percentage? For how many years should some one study to get his diploma in teaching french language and his certificate of qualification? How much approximatively does the program cost ? Whith a baccalaureate in french language and literature and a graduate diploma in psychopedagogy what are the diferent jobs that some one could do in BC?
Notice that your answers are very important for me because they enlight my way to the best choice regarding my situation and my aptitudes.
Thank you very much
43.
Alison Sze | March 30, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Hi Dilys/Jennifer,
I just looked at my application status for September admission on the SSC. It said the following:
The following is a list of items which we recommend that you submit and/or is information that may be of interest to you:
* A final official transcript
from University of British Columbia
Are you not able to access my final transcript through the UBC systems or do I need to order one to be sent to the Faculty of Education after all my courses are finished (in April)? Please advise.
Thanks!
44.
Jennifer Stewart | March 31, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Hi Alison. You do not need to submit a UBC transcript. We can look up this information.
45.
Tlell Pedersen | March 31, 2009 at 10:53 pm
I heard a rumor that ubc is planning to get rid of the elementary 12month training program. I graduate this year from UBC with a degree in History, but haven’t applied yet as i was planning to take next year off to travel. BUT……if the program is going to be cancled for the 2010/2011 school year I may need to rethink my plans. Is the rumor true?
46.
Dilys Chiew | April 1, 2009 at 9:27 am
Hi Tlell, we are not cancelling the 12-month Elementary program anytime soon. I hope this eases your mind.

Michelle | April 3, 2009 at 5:23 am
Hi,
I’m interested in the B.Ed.(secondary) program at UBC. I have a B. Eng degree in Mechanical Engineering. However, my previous degree was in french and I do not have 6 English credits. Is it still possible to apply and take extra credits or would those have to be completed prior to applying? Thank you!
48.
Dilys Chiew | April 6, 2009 at 9:12 am
Michelle, you must complete all 6 credits of English before you can be eligible to start the program. However, you can apply while you are completing those credits.
49.
Lisa | April 7, 2009 at 11:58 pm
What’s the GPA requirement for the secondary B-ED program this year? I have a 2.69 at the moment.
50.
Dilys Chiew | April 8, 2009 at 11:32 am
Hi Lisa, the minimum GPA requirement is 65%, which is C+ (64-67) at UBC. However, this is different from a competitive GPA; please see the Admissions Statistics on our website to find out more about competitive GPAs: http://www.teach.educ.ubc.ca/stepstoapply/requirements/selection_info.html.
51.
L | April 13, 2009 at 10:15 pm
I understand that for the secondary education application process, UBC calculates the GPA of the courses for only courses for the major. Does UBC calculate the major only by the 3rd and 4th year level courses or do they calculate from 1st year courses to 4th year courses?
Thank you.
52.
Dilys Chiew | April 15, 2009 at 10:19 am
Hi L, usually we calculate the 3rd/4th year courses related to the teaching specialization. However, it depends on the specialization as well. For information on how we calculate the admissions average for each specialization, click on the specialization worksheets available here: http://www.teach.educ.ubc.ca/stepstoapply/requirements/academic_requirements.html.
53.
Holmes | April 14, 2009 at 9:51 am
I just want to confirm that the chart specifying average GPAs for B.Ed. acceptance for the last three years (which range from 73.33 to 76.98) are in fact averages and not the acceptance line, meaning students under that don’t get in.
My GPA is somewhere between 71% and 72.5%, but I also have three years of full time grade appropriate ESL experience and am a parent.
Am I competitive?
Thanks
54.
Dilys Chiew | April 15, 2009 at 10:30 am
Hi Holmes, those are averages of successfully admitted students to the program, not the cut-offs to get into the program. Your average appears to be satisfactory, but please note that admission depends on how you compete against other applicants in your specialization. Some specializations can be more competitive than others based on the numbers of applicants. Please email me if you have additional questions: dilys.chiew@ubc.ca.
55.
Girl | April 30, 2009 at 4:49 pm
When is the deadline for the next admission? The July 2010 i believe.
56.
Jennifer Stewart | May 1, 2009 at 2:49 pm
The deadline for 2010 admissions will be in mid-February 2010.
57.
L. | May 1, 2009 at 11:11 pm
It’s been more than 2-4 weeks since I had sent in all my application for the secondary program and the website said that my application is ready for evaluation. Does the delay in the decision mean that I fair poorly in my application?
Thanks.
58.
Dilys Chiew | May 5, 2009 at 9:35 am
Not necessarily. It takes time for the application to be processed and evaluated. Keep checking your Application Status for updates.
59.
Dilys Chiew | March 23, 2009 at 10:04 am
Mehdi, it’s worth the time to send the transcripts to the BC College of Teachers, in my opinion. If you are approved for re-certification, fewer courses are required as compared to completing an entire teacher education program. I would recommend that you contact them about your academic documents.
