Update from the Eye of the Storm

April 3, 2009

Hi everyone,

In the last couple of weeks, Jennifer and I have been keeping our nose to the grindstone and the hard work is paying off. We’re happy to report that we’ve started emailing admission decision letters for July and September applicants. If you got your application in by Feb. 13, including your references and transcripts, it’s likely that your application is being reviewed at this very moment (or it’s sitting in our inboxes). If your status hasn’t changed in the SSC, or you haven’t received an email, don’t panic – we’re going to be sending out decision letters periodically throughout April and May. For those of you who haven’t submitted supplemental forms, please do so by April 30 to remain eligible for the September start.

Feel free to ask questions in the comments box below. First, a disclaimer: I will not be answering any questions about your application status. Thanks for playing.

    Hi Dilys,

I’m a bit confused. I’m sure I got everything in by the original February deadline; In fact, I made sure everything was sent off by the last week of January. Yet, I only received notification that my application was ready to be evaluated as of March 20. Is this something I should be worried about?

Peter, this isn’t any cause for worry. It may just be that we had to wait for additional documents (e.g. transcripts) to complete your file before it can be evaluated.

    Hi Dilys and Jennifer,

I am currently taking 2 UBC courses (1 required to complete my BSc. degree and the other a required Canadian studies course for BEd. admission).
I expect that a decision will not be made until these grades are available on the SSC. Am I correct in my assumption?

Thank you very much for your time.

Angela, a decision could be made earlier. It just depends on how competitive your application is.

    Hi Dilys,

I submitted all my documents by the deadline but was informed by email that one of my references did not arrive. With the help of my referee I was able to overnight a copy of the missing reference which arrived on March 25. Does this mean that my application will be considered not on time? And how will this affect my chances of getting an offer? If you’d like I can email you other details like my student number. Thanks for your time and attention.

Ken, your application will be considered on time if you submitted all the documents by the deadline. Due to the extenuating circumstances, we will not penalize you for the late reference report.

Hi, I was wondering if there are any cohorts available for the July start elementary program in Richmond? I have been accepted and have handed in my confirmation letter, however, a friend of mine told me that there are no cohorts available with a Richmond practicum. If there isn’t, would it be possible to switch to the September 12-month option or would it be too late?

Hi Bernice. The cohorts available for the July start have practicum placements in Vancouver, Burnaby, or Delta. Unfortunately, it is not possible to defer an offer of admission to a future session. Feel free to email me at jennifer.stewart@ubc.ca if you have further questions.

    Hi Jennifer,

If my status idicates that you are currently waiting for my transcripts to be sent, does that mean that no decision will me made until that transcript is received?

As well, on the SSC it indicates that the program i’ve applied for is 12 month-elementary. However, I’ve applied for the FLAGS cohort as my first option. Should it say somewhere that i’ve applied for FLAGS or is that the same as the 12month-elementary?

    Thank you!

Hi Joti. Please email me at jennifer.stewart@ubc.ca with any specific questions about your application status. The admission decision will not be made until we receive the final transcript. FLAGS is a cohort within the elementary 12 month option. Therefore, it is correct that your status says that you have applied to the elementary 12 month BEd program.

    Hi Jennifer/Dilys,

I was accepted to the Educ. program (Thank you!! :) ) and I was just curious about the $100 deposit on line for registering for courses… My course schedule status is still a 4th year Undergraduate standing, should I still pay it now and will that be reflected onto my status as an Education student?

    Thanks again,
    Donna

    Hi Dilys,

I’m gathering my documents right now to apply for the BEd Secondary program in English for September (I made a late decision to apply) and I’m just wondering how my application will be handled if I bring it in to the office on April 29th. I see that on-time applications will be given priority; does that mean that I’m going to be in a pool of applicants competing for a smaller number of spots, or….what? Is it possible that there won’t be any places left at all? I think (hope!) my application is pretty competitive, but I’m curious to know what I’m actually getting into.

    Thanks!

Late applications will only be evaluated if there are still program spaces left. We review on-time applications before late applications.

    Hi Jennifer and Dilys,

I’m sorry to be clogging up your blog. I posted a question, realized I’d typed my name wrong, posted a comment explaining that my name was wrong in the original comment, and now the original comment seems to have disappeared, so I’m going to re-post it.

My question was about my late application. I see that applications submitted before the February deadline will be given priority, and I’m wondering what that means for applications submitted afterwards. I made a late decision to apply, and am planning on bringing in my forms to the office in the next week. I think (hope!) that my application will be competitive, but is it possible that there won’t be any more places left in the program (BEd Secondary option for English) by then?

    Thank you!

    Hello there,
I know that someone has asked if you will wait for current grades before reviewing an application, but I had a slightly more specific question. I’ve applied to the September elementary option but am applying with 90 credits. However, I will not officially be at 90 credits until my course marks come out. So far I have not received any of my course marks for this past semester yet, so I’m wondering if that’s going to push back the review of my application?
    Thanks very much,
    Jaclyn

    Hello there,

I have applied for the 2 year elementary option and I have completed all the required courses for admission. However, because I think my GPA may not be competitive, I am looking into taking summer courses to boost up my GPA. If I were to take a summer course that ends in August, would this be too late for Education admissions? How could I indicate that I would like to take summer courses to make my application competitive even though I have completed 36 credits already?

Also, I am going to start working in the North Van School District next week as an SEA for the rest of the school year and maybe for the summer as well. Is there any way I can include this experience in my application? Thank you for your help.

      Hi Rhiann,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to upgrade your GPA by taking courses this summer. Most admissions decisions are made in May and we do not wait for summer grades before making admission decisions.

Regarding your additional experience, if you send me an email with the information (jennifer.stewart@ubc.ca) then I will add the information to your file.

    Hello,
I ordered my transcript, from a previous school, to get directly mailed to the teacher education center earlier this week and today when I got home they decided to send it directly to me instead! Is it going to be a big problem if I mail it out tomorrow? I think it should get to you on Monday. Also I was finishing my 90 credits this last semester, so that transcript is getting sent out as soon as my grades are handed in. Is this going to be a problem for my application processing?
    thanks

    Hello,

I have applied to the 12 month Secondary option, starting in September 2009. According to the website, most applicants will be notified in May if they have been accepted. I’m sure like me, most applicants are becoming eager right now and I understand the need to remain patient.

I would just like to know if applicants who have NOT been accepted to the program receive an update as well once their application has been rejected. As well, could you tell me if notifications will be sent by mail, or online?

    Thanks for your help,

i was just admitted into the program (Thanks!!) Does the reg. deposit get paid when we mail in our acceptance of the offer, or does this happen just prior to our registration date? As for the criminal record check, we don’t have to get it done on our own, we just mail in the authorization form for ubc to do it, correct?

Can the offer of admission decision form and the criminal record check along with its credit card consent form all be mailed in one envelope together to the same address..2125 Main Mall Vancouver B.C V6T 1Z4??

Hi SF, congratulations on your admission! You can pay your registration deposit on the Student Service Centre from now until the registration date. We will arrange for the Criminal Record Check on your behalf so you just need to return the form and fee payment. Everything can be mailed together; please remember to include the practicum placement form too.

Do you know roughly what the average GPA is for this year (so far) for the 12 month elementary program? My GPA is 71% and I have four years ESL experience. I am currently doing my last pre-req, although I applied at the beginning of February.

    I am getting concerned.

I don’t know yet what the average GPA is going to be for this year as the admissions are still ongoing. There are admissions statistics on the website which show average admissible GPAs for previous years. Most applicants will receive the admission decision by the end of May or early June. Therefore, you shouldn’t be concerned just because you haven’t received the admission decision yet as the admission process is ongoing. Feel free to email me if you want to discuss your application.

    Hello,

I was just wondering about the interview process. I haven’t talked to anyone that has heard of them being done before for this program. I also cannot find anything on the website. Are the admissions of interviewed applicants based solely on interview performance? Any information will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

Kristina, interviewed applicants are the exception rather than the rule, so that explains why you haven’t met anyone who has been interviewed for the UBC B.Ed. program. The interview process does have a part in the admissions process but we also consider your academic credentials and relevant experiences with children/youth as well. Admission is not determined solely on the interview.

I have received acceptance into the Secondary option at the WKTEP (Thank you!) and I was wondering if students admitted into this program will be put in contact with one another before the September start? The Kootenays don’t have much student housing and it would be very useful to know if there are possible room mates out there.

    Thank you,

    Hi Jennifer,
I always like to test my registrations beforehand to see if they will work on the day of registration, but the test for the ELF sections were unsuccessful possibly because of a course that states it is blocked except for students in the generalist cohort, and another course that states it has restricted seats only for students in the secondary program. Overall, the message says that the STT is not available. I know that registration obviously won’t work yet, but it’s been my experience that the ‘test registration’ button is pretty reliable for any registration problems. Will the two courses that appear as blocked and restricted impede the registration at all, or is there still more updating to be done to the STTs? Just want to make sure that everything will run smoothly on the day of registration as I’m eager to make sure I get the cohort of my choice!
    Thanks,
    Jaclyn

One thing confuses me, however. The guide says that total registration for a generalist timetable is 41-44 credits. After selecting all the courses I was supposed to I’m only at 19. Am I correct in assuming that the other credits will be made up as part of the practicum and summer courses in 2010? Or should I be registering for some electives?

However, I am in the elementary 2 year. Is 35 okay, or should I also be at 41-44?
